So you may be asking yourself, what does a photo have to do with product development or inventing something new? If you’ve read any of my other post you’ll know I’m a strong advocate for all things technology. I love gadgets and things that work autonomously but in the same breath, I also love existing things that have been around for years and have proven their value in our world that we live in. For instance, a printed photo slapped on your refrigerator via a magnet sleeve, there’s no better inspiration than this. I love it for multiple reasons, first being it’s a proven technology much older than any of us reading this (the oldest known existing photo is from 1835), secondly it’s in your face every single day and you see it as a clear reminder of why you are doing whatever it is you are doing! Thirdly, what’s better than looking at photos from the past of your family and friends that you will otherwise never really look at all that much if it’s strictly in digital form, they are all memories to be reminded of!
Perhaps the title seems a bit overzealous, but if you watch and listen, sand castles really are featured in so many major ad campaigns and songs and can easily go un-noticed. For instance, Sam Adams ran an ad about their summer ale at the beginning of this summer. You will notice in the video screen capture, the very first thing you see is a bottle of their classic summer ale sitting next to a sand castle, but a sand castle with one major flaw! It’s partially collapsed! Watch the commercial closer and you will see that in the middle of the ad, they show several existing molds lifting off, showing multiple collapses. This is one of the problems that we are solving here at Create A Castle!
A passion for castles and the arts started when I was young, very young…when in third grade I was awarded for designing a clay pot I made at Mill Ridge School in Danbury, Connecticut. Even before this, tinker toys and wooden blocks, to growing up in a bake shop (literally) and living in my grandmother’s house with a greenhouse attached to it for year round gardening, which was her passion, I’ve always been surrounded by things that forced me to use the creative side of my mind. My incredible mom recently shared some of my old artwork from way back then, which I created when home with her at her bakery, Heidi’s Cake and Cookie Shop in Danbury Connecticut. It all started to add up why I’m so passionate about Create A Castle!
What if I told you that I’m a tech geek at heart, me the inventor of a new sand toy. That my life revolves around an electronic lifestyle and it’s my life blood to create all things digital on the internet. I love all things gadgets to the point of a flaw. I love anything that is electronic, digital cameras that have amazing megapixel counts, drones with 4k filming abilities, you name it, I love it if it’s anything revolving around tech. What If I told you that I survive through the internet and all things digital and electronic. Would you believe me? Would you believe that a guy who made his living off of all things digital thought of something so non-digital as a new way to construct sandcastles?
Sand castles are really something special. As the years have passed, it became something really amazing to bond with my kids and my family on the beach and not want to destroy the castles we painstakingly created together. Each time we could make something different with the tools we had and as we progressed in our abilities, I quickly realized that as I was creating castles, I was literally lost in time. I had found my peace and quiet while building sand castles, it was my personal zen garden for meditation, sometimes to a fault and my kids would ditch me because I became more and more obsessed about wanting to build that perfect sand castle which would literally take hours and hours to construct!
If you are a parent, you know how challenging it is to keep you kids entertained and engaged – especially away from video games and TV. And in this fast moving digital age, kids like to see results from their actions quickly and want to have fun in the process. While on the beach, you need beach toys that entertain your children, not frustrate them. Part of the belief system here at Create A Castle is to make sure that your children (and you parents) get results from your efforts.
The idea for Create A Castle came to me during my 2016 vacation at Laguna Beach, California. After watching a dad and his young son struggle unsuccessfully to build a castle with traditional sand molds and buckets, I thought there had to be a more efficient, less time consuming and FUN way to build elaborate sand castles.
